Our Soul Escaped Like A Bird

Today I remembered this little chorus we sang at our UCCF meetings; it was a favourite for us then in the late 1980s. Some persons sing it as “Our soul is escaped like a bird” or “My soul escaped like a bird”.

The video below gives an interesting version of the song.

Our Soul Escaped Like A Bird
Our soul escaped like a bird
Out of the snare of the fowler

Our soul escaped like a bird
Out of the snare of the fowler

The snare is broken and we are escaped
Our help is in the name of the Lord

The snare is broken and we are escaped
Our help is in the name of the Lord Continue reading “Our Soul Escaped Like A Bird”

Whoso Offereth Praise

I remember singing this chorus from the Bible at Youth Meetings on Friday evenings. Bro. Patrick Harrison always started us off in singing this lovely chorus.

Whoso Offereth Praise
Composer unknown

Whoso offereth praise
Glorifieth me
Whoso offereth praise
Glorifieth me
And to him that ordereth
His conversation alright
Will I show the salvation of God. Continue reading “Whoso Offereth Praise”

Be Bold, Be Strong!

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. ~ Joshua 1:9

Be Bold, Be Strong!
by Morris Chapman

Be bold! Be strong!
For the Lord your God is with you.
Be bold! Be strong!
For the Lord your God is with you.
I am not afraid,
I am not dismayed,
Because I’m walking in faith and victory,
Come on and walk in faith and victory,
For the Lord, your God is with you. Continue reading “Be Bold, Be Strong!”

By The Rivers Of Babylon

We sang this song yesterday in an Induction Service at a Baptist church in Kingston. It is a song that was popular on the radio in my childhood days in the 1970’s – 1980’s.

Although we knew that the words were from the Bible, we never sang it in church then because it was a Rastafari song recorded by the Jamaican reggae group – The Melodians, in 1970 (Source: Wikipedia). Well times have surely changed, and we, along with the members of the congregation sang it in church.

By The Rivers Of Babylon
by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton
(Text adapted by H. Crichlow)

By the rivers of Babylon, where we sat down,
And there we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon, where we sat down,
And there we wept, when we remembered Zion.

And the wicked, carried us away in captivity
Required from us a song,
How can we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land? Continue reading “By The Rivers Of Babylon”

God Is Not A Man That He Should Lie

This is a chorus from the Bible which we sang at Sunday evening services. We loved singing it while Pastor Hugh Black played his guitar.

God Is Not A Man That He Should Lie
Composer unknown

God is not a man, that he should lie;
Neither the son of man, that he should repent:
Hath he said, and shall he not do it?
Or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

Behold, I have received commandment to bless:
And he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.

Oh! God is not a man, that he should lie;
Neither the son of man, that he should repent. Continue reading “God Is Not A Man That He Should Lie”

Who Is Like Unto Thee?

Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee! – Psa. 71:19

This chorus is one of the worship choruses we learned at UCCF.

Who Is Like Unto Thee?
Who is like unto thee, O Lord?
Who is like unto thee, O Lord?
Among the gods, who is like thee?
Glorious in holiness, fearful in praises,
Doing wonders, Alleluia! Continue reading “Who Is Like Unto Thee?”

The Steadfast Love Of The Lord

It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

The Steadfast Love Of The Lord
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
His mercies never come to an end;
They are new every morning,
New every morning,
Great is Thy faithfulness, O Lord.
Great is Thy faithfulness! Continue reading “The Steadfast Love Of The Lord”
